An analysis of Tourism in Gold Coast and the Improvement of its Hotel Sector

Often referred to as a miracles thus being transformed from a city of isolation in to the sixth most populous city of the nation and the most popular leisure city of the continent, Gold Coast has its own ups and downs but has steadily cemented its place among the most visited list around the world accounting to around ten million visitors annually. Some has complaints over its rapid growth and concerns over the erosion of coastal lines but in places like “Surfers Paradise” , the numbers continue to rise regardless of any barriers. Traditionally being a location owning the phrase “beyond the black stump”, with less than 200 years of inhabited history, this 40 km urban coastal strip has brought Queensland in to fame.

This remarkable improvements doubled in the 1990 s where the average figures per night was recorded as 10,000 foreign and 30, 0000 local visitors. The demand for lodging has been considerably increased along with the number of visitors while four and five star hotels built in late 1980 s have dominated the majority of room capacities. One significant incident which affected the tourism industry was the pilot’s strike in 1989. Due to the massive hotel projects carried out targeting the development in the tourism sector in Gold Coast due to competition and pressure on the rates, many five star hotels have retained most of their visitors by offering massive discounts which have enabled them to win the upper hand over the other competitors operating in the industry. Some owners were forced to offer these discounts and remain in the competition while some opted to sell their properties for as low as 30% of their capital investment.

Although being hit hard by natural disasters and economic downturns, the number of visitors continues to increase even though with a higher rate Australian dollar which the other countries have an edge over them in providing cheaper accommodation. Concentration on the Gold Coast accommodation by government officials has been such since the recently completed projects provides nearly 1000 rooms in to the supply and the majority of public investments are recorded to be pumped in to the development of such areas. Gold coast has over 70% of their rooms occupied while the locals has also made a significant contribution to the domestic income hence enjoying in their own locality  proves more economical than reaching out for other destinations.
